What is Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) is a medical system that has been used to treat animals for thousands of years. This system includes acupuncture, herbal medicine, acupressure, and food therapies. On the human side, meditation and exercises are also used, but this is hard to teach our pets. TCVM has been used to treat a variety of problems including pain, arthritis, various organ diseases (heart, lung, kidney, liver, digestive, hormonal, allergic, reproductive), and behavioral abnormalities. In fact, TCVM can be used to treat (or support Western treatment of) almost any imbalance other than those requiring surgery. Even then, TCVM can help your pet recover from the surgery and anesthesia more quickly, so still should be used before and after the procedure. TCVM is especially powerful for chronic illnesses. The TCVM approach is to balance the individual as an integrated, energetic structure by helping the body regulate itself.
In cooperation with a patient’s current veterinarian, Island Holistic Veterinary Center will provide consultation and recommendations regarding acupuncture, herbal medicine, and food therapy only after a full review of a patient’s medical history and medical records have been completed and a Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medical Exam, as well as a Western Physical Exam, has been performed.
